The trick to laying lines is the pressure that you apply. Push in on the fabric and move up. To take corners, you want to move in slight bursts while you rotate you're from handle. You are trying to prevent the tufting machine from bouncing on the fabric as you tuft.

Figuring out good spacing in-between lines is helpful so you can control the density of the rug you are making. Laying lines closer together will give you a "thicker" rug.
